Why Weavetab MCP is AGPL
Published: 2026-05-30
A short note on why the core MCP server ships under AGPL-3.0, what that means for hobbyists, startups, and enterprises, and how the commercial exemption works in practice.
## The license
Weavetab MCP is licensed under **AGPL-3.0**. You can read, run, modify, and self-host it. If you distribute it — or expose a modified version over a network — your modifications must be published under the same license.
## Who this affects
- **Individuals & internal tools** — no obligation. Run it, fork it, ship it inside your company.
- **Products that embed MCP and expose it to end users** — either open your fork under AGPL, or acquire a commercial exemption.
- **OEM redistribution** — commercial exemption required.
## The exemption
The commercial license removes the AGPL network clause and grants redistribution rights. It's the same binary; the difference is legal, not technical.
